One Maryam Sadiq and her husband, Abubakar Sadiq we’re yesterday arrested by the Kano State Police command at the Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital, Kano for the supposed theft of a day-old baby.
The police stated that the male child, delivered yesterday along his twin brother was whisked away from the hospital bed while Parading the suspects at the Bompai Police headquarters,
Correspondents gathered that DSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the police public relations officer of the command got the report through intelligent information, after which a team of detective operatives was deployed. DSP Abdulahi said the baby was retrieved successfully and suspects apprehended within 12 hours after the occurrence.
‘Operatives of the Nigeria police, kano state command, on 08 September 2021, around 0300hrs, got a report from one Muhammad of Gayawa Quarters, Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano, that around 0130hrs, one of his new-born male twin babies was discovered missing. Gaya, the complainant explained that his wife birthed the twins on 07 September 2021 at Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital Kano and was hospitalised.
‘In Muhammad narration, his sister-in-law, who was taking care of the babies at the Maternity ward fell asleep. By the time she woke up, the child was nowhere to be found. When the report was made, the Kano State Commissioner of Police authorized an intelligence team, led by SP Daniel Itse Amah to recover the victim and apprehend the criminals.’
PPRO, DSP Abdulahi said the team who subsequently got to the scene and began a discrete investigation, codon the entire hospital premises.
‘The investigation in the hospital, however, could not rescue the child at that instance, persistent efforts, together with intelligence sharing, made the arrest of the 22-year-old Maryam and her husband, Abubakar, all of Rijiyar Zaki Quarters, Kano possible and baby, retrieved from them in their residence.’
Nonetheless, the Police, revealed that an initial inquiry disclosed that Maryam, alleged to be the primary suspect has admitted to stealing the baby at the hospital.
The PPRO said, among the confession obtained from the main suspect was that, she undertook the dastardly act to appease her husband, who has been repeatedly troubling her life to give him a male child.
According to DSP Abdulahi, CP Sama’ila Shu’aibu Dikko, the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, has authorized that the case is moved to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Command for a thorough examination, while the accused be arraigned before the court as soon as investigation is concluded, saying that the baby has been given to his mother.
